Coates 1989 HAZELEY, HAZELEY HEATH, hamlets in Mattingley Old English/Middle English 'brushwood hill'. Old English 'hese'='brushwood' is well attested in the South Country. The universal 'u' forms in the second element are rather unusual; some 'e' and 'i' forms are expected. The modern '-ley' ending is a rationalization of 17th century spellings in '-le' presumably really representing the sound in 'handle'. |
